In a series of key meetings held in Washington, DC, Argentina’s Economy Minister, Luis Toto Caputo, engaged with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva to discuss strategies for Argentina’s economic recovery and stability. The talks, which took place on Thursday, aimed at further aligning the IMF’s support with Argentina’s priorities, as Georgieva highlighted a collaborative approach, emphasizing the importance of working as “a single team” dedicated to Argentina’s growth.
Caputo was joined by Finance Secretary Pablo Quirno and Central Bank President Santiago Bausili, while Georgieva was supported by IMF Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath and Western Hemisphere Department Director Luis Cubeddu. The preliminary discussions between Caputo and Gopinath, followed by a meeting with Georgieva after a G20 gathering, underscored the IMF’s recognition of recent improvements in Argentina’s economic indicators. Georgieva pointed to these developments as an encouraging step toward Argentina’s broader financial objectives.
According to local sources, the Argentine government has gained “credibility” with the IMF, as the current relationship is now being built on measurable achievements rather than prior promises. This shift strengthens Argentina’s position as it seeks a new financing programme with the IMF under the Libertarian administration of President Javier Milei. While Caputo recently shared that a new agreement may involve additional funds, he cautioned that discussions are still ongoing and no concrete figures have been decided. The possibility of formalising a new programme remains uncertain, with expectations that an agreement could extend into next year.
